DIY Upside-down Dutch Braid Bun

Hey everyone!

Today I’m going to show you how to do this cute messy bun style! It definitely takes a bit of practice to get the ‘upside down’ braiding technique down, but once you get it, it’s such an awesome hairstyle to add to your collection. 😉 This hairstyle also works on pretty much any hair length.

I just got my hair cut short again last week, and anyone with shorter hair knows how hard it often is to put your hair up without the bottom layer of your hair falling down because it’s too short. So this hairstyle is perfect for getting those short layers into your bun, while also looking pretty at the same time! 😉

Items needed: a small rubber hair tie, 1 regular hair tie, bobby pins, & Optional: Scrunchie

Difficulty: Hard

Time: 5-10 minutes

Step-by-step instructions:

1.) Start with your hair down…

2.) Next, gather up roughly the top half of you hair and secure out of the way for now..

3.) Then flip your head forward and brush all the hair towards the front of your head with your fingers..

4.) Now start to dutch braid your hair, making sure to start with a fairly small section. It can be a bit tricky to get the technique of braiding ‘upside down’ at first, so don’t worry if it takes a few attempts to get the look you want. (It definitely took me a few tries!)

5.) Once you’ve run out of hair to add in, stand up straight again and secure the ends of your braid tightly to your head with a small rubber elastic.

6.) Take down your top section of hair now and gather all your hair into a high ponytail.

Secure with a hair tie…7.) Gather your hair into a bun. You can make your bun however you like. I used a similar technique to this one since my hair is pretty short at the moment.

Pin everything to your liking. I added a white scrunchie to finish off the style (You can shop it here) and you’re done!

Don’t forget you can now follow SGH on Instagram @setongirlshairstyles. If you try this hairstyle, on any of our others, tag us on insta, I’d love to see your re-creations!

Let me know in the comments if you’d try this hairstyle, along with any hair requests or questions!
